SDCC Thundercats Mini-Mates

This year at SDCC, Mini-Mates revealed an exclusive Thundercats set available from Action Figure Express.

And the good news for ‘Cats fans is that there will be two sets available at NYCC in October. What are the mixs? We’ll have to wait in see but in the meantime we have this first set to enjoy.

Starting with Lion-O, this is a great mini-mate.

He comes with a ton of accessories; two heads, the enlarged Sword Of Omens, the shrunken Sword of Omens and his claw shield. I had a hard time getting the sword in the claw and on Lion-O’s arm, which makes having the small sword kind of a pain because it’ll be an easily lost accessory. Great detail and paint and the hair is awesome. Crazy hair. The only thing I wish, and this isn’t a knock because it’s impossible with mini-mate construction, was that you could put the sword in front of his face for “sight beyond sight”.

Panthro is another great figure. Not as many accessories, but they gave the chain enough length that you can put Panthro into a variety of poses with it. Love the spikes on his harness.

Jaga is a great looking figure. Good job on the translucent making him appear ghostly. The helmet and cap, as well as the paint and clothing, don’t have the ghost look but overall it’s a good effect. I was surprised that Jaga was in this set, or at least in the first release.

Mumm-Ra is the disappointment in the 4-pack. The level of detail on his is great but the huge cape, which is meant to look like the one he wears the envelopes him, really gives him a complete lack of poseability. His hands can barely move and they are hard to get at. The hood doesn’t even “lock” into place on the head peg and since that’s the case I would rather have had the head have no hole (like Panthro’s) so can take the hood off and have unhooded Mumm-Ra. The figure will look good on display but the lack of poseability will limit it to just straight-up displays and not battle scenes or anything like that.

Last, but not least, we have Snarf. Snarf is just a piece of PVC carved into the ‘Cats.. what was Snarf anyways? Nanny, butler, pet, guardian? The detail and paint are nice and it’s a neat little piece and I’m glad to have it included. Better a non-poseable Snarf then no Snarf at all.

DST has said that the line is limited, but I hope this leads to more such lines. There are alot of properties out there that could have the Mini-Mates treatment (the old Dungeons & Dragons cartoon would be cool, Galaxy Rangers, Masters of the Universe, Spiral Zone, and so many others). I hope we see a Thundertank at some point and we have two more sets to look forward to.

I love this set but there is one bad problem with it, seems a lot of people’s sets have had the Thundercats symbols rub off leaving behind a very faded symbol or in some cases just a red dot. My Sword of Omens had the typical tape residue on it and when I rubbed that off, the symbol came along for the ride. Here’s a before and after pic where I redrew the symbol and covered it with clear coat:

That sucks.  Mine came out fine.  Hopefully they fix this in time for the NYCC sets.
